Enough is enough.

I'm getting down to business today.

I've been absent from this space for so long due to one simple fact. I don't want to write this blog post. I've been putting it off, procrastinating, worrying, stressing, spinning around and around in circles about it. Even now as I sit here in front of the screen I'm fighting the urge to walk the dogs, do the dishes, click on any window to get me away from this task. And now that I've gotten you sufficiently worried, too, here goes.

Changes have come to Fall Creek Fibers. Due to many (many many) circumstances, my business plan had to change.

Fall Creek Fibers will no longer be an online one stop shop. After much reflection (and worry about space, cost, and the effect this business was going to have on my personal life) I've come to the conclusion that the only reason I love doing this job so much is because I get to be creative. Where's the creativity in buying something from someone and then reselling it to someone else? There's money in it, sure. And there's a surprisingly large demand for undyed roving and dye and very few suppliers, sure. But no love. (Cue the Santa Cruz hippie woman in me with messy hair and incense.) The love and passion that is poured into hand dyed goods is what makes them special.

And on that note, Fall Creek Fibers will continue to sell hand dyed roving and hand spun yarn. And hand dyed yarn in wholesale or special order quantities (and through the sock yarn club).

And possibly down the road, dye kits for the aspiring fiber artist.

Now, I'm wrestling with these decisions for many reasons. One, I'm not into doing things in a halfway fashion and cutting back on my business plans sounds halfway. Two, there is a place in my heart for my original business plan, but I think that place includes a brick and mortar store tucked into a busy strip with an apartment above and a shop cat named Suri. Three, I really WANT to do this the way I had originally planned. Unfortunately, the things that are stopping me are too big to ignore and more than wanting this, I DON'T want to set myself up to fail.

There have also been many shifts happening in my personal life that make now (I'm a big fan of doing things big and NOW) not the best time to have large amounts of inventory in my possession. There's been talk of moving, of staying, of moving again, of staying even more and when we finally reached a decision that will affect us for the next year (when Sean and I speak of change we often put time constraints on decisions, as we both tend to want to do everything big and NOW), it was one of staying. Staying in this beautiful (but too small) space through another winter and into another spring. This wasn't necessarily the decision either of us WANTed to make, but I think it was the right one. I know I don't go very much into the lobster's life, but basically his job right now is about to open up his skill set to an entirely new and different field. One in which he will be able to move around much more freely within the next couple years... Hard to pass up an opportunity like that. Also, we have the BEST landlords in the whole entirety of rentworld and we can't leave them without the right place to go. And while this space is certainly not ideal for running a business out of, it is home. Hopefully with a little bit of rearranging we can make it work for another year.

So there we have it. The big scary decision I didn't want to make but did.

The flowering cactus in my garden finally bloomed!

Good morning my beautifuls.

It's my favorite kind of morning. The lobster is still snoozing, it's wonderfully foggy outside (with a hint of the warmth to come this afternoon. These kinds of days are my favorite probably because they remind me of October and new beginnings.), the smell of jasmine is wafting through my open window and I'm bundled up in warm but flowy clothes with my yerba mate latte. Mops has crawled back into bed to sleep in with Sean (please don't get me wrong, we don't allow him to sleep in the bed with us at night. A different lifetime ago Sean used to get up at 5:00a to go to work and when he would leave in the mornings he used to put Mops up on the bed with me to keep me warm. The habit stuck and now Mops eats his breakfast promptly at 7:00a and then hops up on the bed to sleep in.) and the kittens have full bellies (for the moment) and for a few blissful moments things are peaceful.

Today I'm going to dye up some more roving for the shop and there is a promise of a yummy soy chai from my favorite coffee shop later on. I had a busy weekend of updates and I've unfortunately come to the conclusion that luxury blend yarns are going to be temporary for Fall Creek Fibers. In fact, Fall Creek Fibers may be taking a much different direction than I originally had planned. I worry that in being a supplier of wheels, parts, dye, undyed, I'm going to lose the part of the process that I love so much, the process of creativity. Of pouring color onto wool and being delightfully surprised every time by the vividness of the colors seeping into (my clothes, hands, counter) the fibers. So I'm working on a revamp of the website, stay tuned in for more news as it progresses. As it stands I'm not sure in which direction I am more strongly pulled, but time will tell.

In other (more personal) news, my vegan adventure is going great! Only a few minor set backs (I ate cheese twice and I caved on an egg sandwich when we were decidedly out of food) and I feel fabulous. I've lost 12 pounds in a month, my morning sniffles are at bay, and my energy levels have been off the charts! I have noticed that when I eat bread I feel pretty crappy so I'm going to try to stay away from that this week and my body has strangely decided that heart burn shall plague me from sun up to sleepy time, so I'm not thrilled with that. Need to eat more base foods and less fruit juice. Also, the month of no eating out has gone really well. We did go out once to a vegan/veggie restaurant that sort of rocks my world but I gave myself one slip up, so I don't feel poorly about it. I'm going dress shopping with my sister and company next week so maybe I'll give myself two slip ups this month. Working on being kinder to myself about set backs and mistakes. Plus this month has been pretty extreme for me for it's only natural to want to rebel a little.

Anyway, I have a lot of packages to ship off from my super busy update weekend (thanks so everyone who has helped me reach 400 sales!!!) and then I need to get some more goodies in order to fill up my shop. I hope you are all having a magical Monday and an even more magical week ahead. Much love!

Okay... -big sigh-.  I am feeling much more like myself now and I'm super excited to share my new project with you!  If you haven't already, head on over to Fall Creek Fibers and poke around.  Eventually this blog will find its way over to the FCF (Fall Creek Fibers) domain and when that happens I will be sure to let you know to update your bookmarks/feeds.  The idea is to have everything 'theurchiness' packed into one convenient identity where you can shop, read, and learn about all things fiber!  The tutorial link section is packed full of helpful tidbits (as well as some interesting places to get your blog fix) and at some point there will be a FCF tutorials section.

As for the shop.  Well.  I'm stoked about it.  It will stock everything from SOAK (for your fiber, quilting, and delicates), gifts for knitters (we have some amazing partnerships in the works for things like knitters hand balm and notions/needle/drop spindle cases), and everything you could need for creating your own handspun.  Drop spindle kits, dye kits, un-dyed roving, etc.  Not to mention all of the handspun and hand dyed roving you've come to expect from theurchiness (and a new line of colorways in the earth tones you love).  And I'm taking my hand to dyeing some sock yarns... Because you can never have too much indie dyed sock yarn.

The transition will be slow, and I can't imagine ever completely shutting down my etsy shop (because I do love it so), so for a while you'll still be able to find me as theurchiness.  The idea is that by the end of 2010 the shop will be in full swing and I have lots of exciting things planned for the launch.

Starting with...  A giveaway (or three)!

A note on my relationship with the weather.

When you work in a box, a cube, a building with artificial light, the weather is inconsequential.  Sometimes it's dark and raining when you walk to your car, sometimes light and warm, but generally the weather is not part of your day to day routine.  Heating and air conditioning keeps your body at a consistent temperature and fluorescent lighting does not signal a change of time.

Since working from home I've noticed a shift in my relationship with the weather (and with time).  I rarely look at the clock throughout the day, but rather notice the shifts of light on my hardwood floors.  My body naturally wants to slumber at 1:30a and wake up once at 6:15a and then again at 9:00a.  At 11:15a (when the light begins to touch the windowsill in my kitchen) I have breakfast and my second cup of tea.  When the morning breeze settles into a quiet stillness in the trees and the fog lifts from its sleep (around 12:30p) I venture out into the light for a walk with the pups.  Then I find the rhythm of work until the light turns yellow (around 3:30p) and I pause for a cup of tea and to browse recipes for dinner.  When the sun no longer shines on my herb garden in the front yard I know to get up from my desk and begin dinner where the lobster and I eat and play a game and catch up on our days.  The light then disappears behind the mountain and it is 7:30p and time to get to work again.   When the frogs start gossiping with the owls I close my laptop and pick up a book or watch a movie until my eyes close and I shan't awake until the light changes again.

Now, there is something to be said for the feeling of your feet firmly planted in the earth.  It is mostly lovely to be so connected with the ways of the sun and moon.

But what happens when you've becomes so at peace with the weather that it becomes an intimate emotional relationship?  I take great offense to days where it is too hot to sleep, and even more offense to days that feel unstable.  First sunny then rainy in less than an hour?  How am I supposed to deal with that?  Where do the days belong that are foggy all day long, where do I belong?  And what of the days that are sticky with humidity and the tropical breeze blows and the last thing I want to do is sit in front of a whirring laptop in a stale and still house?  When I need the wildness of a mountain creek or the gentle movement of waves upon the sand?  I have to go adventuring (and maybe abandon working for a while) to find the movement I need to set my days by.

To be so grounded in the weather is a blessing, but sometimes I feel like the weather and I need to take a break.

Around here...

There's been a lot of sniffles and snuggles and searching for inspiration in clouds and fog.  It seems that my immune system threw in the towel (after a whole season of no colds!) for the first day of spring and finals week.  It never fails that finals stress me out to the extent of getting ill.

But today I'm on the up swing and I'm sitting here with my yerba mate latte (ohmygosh I have to tell you about the most amazing thing in the world.  I usually stay away from my foodie/nutritionist side here on this blog because I spend so much time thinking/worrying/talking about it in real life that it sort of exhausts me.  But in short, I have a dairy allergy and soy milk doesn't work for me either.  So in my quest to find a suitable milk substitute I've stumbled upon the nectar of the gods.  Trader Joe's Vanilla Rice Drink. Oh. My. Word.  Creamy, slightly sweet, no weird aftertaste, and SO good warmed up in your morning tea.  Go, try, revel.) and a long day off ahead of me.  This morning we took a nice little jaunt on the beach, the wildflowers are just amazing this time of year!  I love going to the beach on rainy Mondays... Living in a tourist town lends itself to really appreciating the quiet days.

I spent the weekend getting ready for my shop update on Wednesday and there some really pretty braids of roving that will be up for grabs!

I'm also working on some super secret projects and I'm so excited about them I'm just bursting to tell you!  But alas, you will have to wait.  But don't worry, there will be lots of things to keep you engaged until the big unveiling.  Like an awesome theurchiness gift certificate giveaway!  On Friday head on over to the beautiful Virtue Natural blog for a chance to win.  Don't worry, I'll come back and remind you when it's time.  :)

And now, time for some more relaxation.  I'm almost back to my old self and I'm thinking tomorrow I'll have my energy back.  The awesome thing about being sick is how far along I'm coming on my knitting!  I'm working on my first garment project, a sweater vest in amazing Cascade Venezia Worsted...  It's a silk/merino blend and it's to die for.  I'm almost half way through the sweater and I'm sort of bored and sort of loving it all at the same time.

Shame on me!

 More than a week since my last post?  I suppose you would assume that I have a whole lot of things to tell you, but in reality I've spent the last week buried in the stress of finals and starting a small business.

There are a few things I can share, though!

 ... This is Wilson, he's my new kitty.  I picked him up as a foster and fell so completely in love with his cuddly and friendly nature that its looking very good for Wilson's future (we are an incredibly kitty friendly home after all).  I miss Marvin so so much and since he died I haven't had a cuddle buddy on which to kiss and love.  The greatest thing about Marv was his incredible ability to know when I needed some loving and some cuddles and a kitty belly to bury my tears in.  Wilson is similar... he loves kisses on the nose, belly rubs, hugs, and sitting on your shoulder as you do the dishes.  (Okay, Marvin didn't do that and I'm kind of glad because seventeen pounds of orange fur on your shoulder sounds rather inconvenient.)  So Wilson is becoming a permanent fixture around these parts... I'm 98% certain.  (These things can take time.)   I'll know for sure if we get an application for him and I react with a "Ohh no!  He's mine!".

... I'm officially a small business on a federal and state level.  Which is exciting and stressful all at once and my head is swimming with numbers.

... Somebody really lovely is helping me give my brand a new look.

Saturday Afternoons are made of this...

Well, wordy Friday got away from me there, didn't it?  Oh well, today is a new day... With puppies and tea and yarn, oh my!

It's been a busy week for me.  Between the shop update on Monday, taking my dog to urgent care (he got something stuck in his soft pallet... I swear that dog will be the end of me.  Or at least drive me to financial ruin.), then new foster puppies who are a whole giant mess of cuteness and work, seeing Alice in Wonderland (go see it, it was great.), and more errands than I can count, I have no idea where the time went.

I'm still trying to get some stitches in now and then... What are you all working on these days?  I'm knitting up a gorgeous orchids and fairy lights (rav link) hat in a super soft cotton blend.  It's a little slow going and it's my first time making bobbles!  They're kind of annoying, but I think the end result will be worth it.  And again, I thank the knit goddess that is grumperina for her awesome tutorial on cabling without a cable needle.


I'm sitting here with my third cup of tea (late night last night in the world of Underland) and there are two little puppies bouncing about with unspun superwash corriedale bits hanging out of their mouths.   This morning I spent finishing up an English essay and dyeing up some lovely roving for the update next week.  And I took pictures of my process so that I may share it with you!  I still need to edit the photos, but keep an eye out for a dyeing tutorial soon.

I've also been doing lots and lots of research and brainstorming for my etsy shop (and eventually the lys I hope to open).  There are some exciting new things happening this year!  I can't believe how much time and effort goes into having your own business...  I'm passionately loving every little hiccup.  Because what could be better than sleeping in every day, playing with puppies while photos upload, and watching Mad Men while packing up orders?  (Speaking of Mad Men, omg I am SO glad Joanie didn't leave for good and thank goodness Betty is marrying someone else, and when the heck does season 4 start?)

Tonight I'm off to the in-laws for dinner and tomorrow is a housework day.  I'll be back next week with a dye tutorial and a shop update on Wednesday at 1:00p PST.

Hello Darlings. Let's catch up, shall we?

First things first, eh?  Meet Penelope.  She is our newest foster and she is the sweetest and mellowest (Is that a word?) female kitty we've ever had the pleasure of sharing our home with.  You can read more about her here.

Second, this morning I woke up to the prettiest kind of rain.  It's the kind of rain that is steady, but light.  The temperature outside is warm enough to leave windows open and the sound of the droplets pattering on leaves is just the loveliest soundtrack for this lazy Sunday morning.  The lobster is still snoozing (Mops joined him) and my kitties are scattered on various windowsills, watching the birds and quivering leaves.  It's almost time for my second cup of tea and I'm loving the smell of forest pine incense.  (To throw a loop into this pretty picture I'm painting for you... The reason I'm burning said incense is because two days ago I made asparagus for dinner.  It was a lovely dinner of polenta in pink sauce, red potatoes with sour cream and chives, and oven roasted asparagus with lemon.  But in the process of oven roasting the asparagus I dropped a stem onto the bottom of the oven and promptly forgot about it.  Then this morning I preheated the oven to 400 degrees and hopped in the shower.  Yeah, not so good.)  It's quiet here for the moment and everyone is snuggly and grateful to be under a (leaking) roof.

Third, yarn!  How was that to get you drooling?  I've been spinning up a storm (and you've been buying up a storm!) and I have some dyeing to do this week for a roving update.  My roving updates have been so overwhelming due to announcing them on ravelry (join my rav group!) and on flickr.  The braids disappear from my shop so fast that it's not really fair to new customers!  So I've decided that once a month I'm going to do a surprise roving update where I shan't announce the time and date and you'll all be very surprised to see my shop stocked with pretties.  This, of course, is in addition to the regularly scheduled updates where my repeat customers can reserve braids as they are listed.  As for yarn, well, I list new yarn (those three up there ^ are still available, get them while they last!) almost every day so that means you'll just need to visit often!  OH!  And!  You have one more week to buy to participate in the birthday drawing!  See my shop announcement for details on that one.

Fourth, knitting projects.  I'm working on two of my own designs right now, how cool is that?  The first is a Noro dog sweater for Mops (spoiled!) and it's turning out quite well I think.  I've been meaning to knit him a sweater for quite some time but every pattern I found didn't work the way I wanted it to.  So custom sweater it is! I finally feel as though my knitting skills are up to par with creating my own patterns... It's quite liberating!  The other project is a secret, still.  It will be up for sale in my etsy shop at some point, so I'll keep you posted on that one.  Hint: It has something to do with handspun.  :)

Fifth, I have a very busy and important day of doing nothing scheduled.  What are you beautiful people up to today?

A new rhythm...

We've begun to settle into a new kind of home. This home only has two kitties, but they are well loved. There are less cuddles to go around, but the lobster doesn't have to sleep with his feet hanging off the bed. There are less kitty kisses that smell like cat food and chives, but my window garden is growing.

Today I'm feeling much more emotionally capable... The dishes have been done, the lobster is home from his trip (useless, because he's sore, dehydrated and exhausted, but home.), a decision has been made (we're staying in this humble abode until the end of the year... YAY!), and I've thrown myself back into school and work.

Speaking of work... Shop news.


First, my yarn was featured on the front page of etsy! Oh my goodness! That's me, in the bottom right hand corner... my pretty bamboo yarn, Rumpelstiltskin.

Second, fiber club spots are going to open in the middle of February for March, April, and May.

Third, Fiber update has been postponed a week or two, look for it before Valentine's Day.

I think that's all the shop news for now... Things have been slow there on my end (not on yours, though! I reached my monetary sales goal for January and I'll be making a huge donation to Docs w/o Borders tomorrow... I'll let you know the total when I tally it all up. You guys rock.) but I'm hoping to pick things back up this week.

In other news... Are you ready to die from the cute?


I knit this little creature up last week for my bff and she loved him. I used leftover sock yarn and size 1 needles that made my fingers want to fall off, but he is totally worth it. Here is the pattern (rav link) for those interested. The pattern was really well written and easy to follow... All of the shaping is done with short rows! So clever.

A bit of blog news...

I'm still working (in between other types of work like homework and design work) on the kinks here on the blog so be patient with me. The side bars are still a mess and the navigation bar isn't working yet, and I noticed an issue with comment spacing. Be patient with me! :)

I've decided to add a new weekly feature... I want to try 52 lists this year. Once a week until next January, similar to hulaseventy (add this blog to your follow list immediately. She is so inspiring!) and borrowing prompts from listography.com.

And I promise to bring back "Things I Love" soon.

I just realized I haven't told you what was going on the shop lately...

I debuted a usable art yarn collection for 2010 and they're flying off the shelves (so to speak)! "Play" is part of that series and it's one of the last left.

There will be a nice big roving update this week, looking forward to cooking up some great color for you! There will be BFL, rambouillet, and superwash merino. If you're looking for specific colors, now is the time to let me know!

Got a package of really pretty roving in the mail and am inspired to start spinning!

Hello my lovelies...

I'm sipping on Vanilla Caramel tea (with milk and a tiny bit of brown sugar... You would not believe how amazing this stuff is. It smells like cookies.) in my newly cleaned house. There is a lovely fire burning in the wood stove, candles burning on the bookshelves, and Dean Martin crooning through my stereo. It's nice here, I wouldn't trade it.

Today I cleaned like a mad woman. I even got up early to do it so I could spend my afternoons the way I like to. I dusted, scrubbed, reorganized, vacuumed, purged, and picked up every single one of the 250 Q-Tips I spilled all over the inside of the bathroom cupboard yesterday. And I feel better because of it. My usual rest spot in my home is my little knitting corner... Which has a great view of the bedroom, office space, bathroom, and kitchen. The problem is when I'm sitting in this spot trying to get some blogging/spinning/knitting done and I can see the dirty dishes in the sink, cat hair stuck to the carpet, and piles and piles of unruly filing taking over my desk. Not conducive to yarn-like relaxation.

But now the house is clean and smelling delicious!

So here I sit with my yummy delicious tea, some photo editing, and a tiny little kitten who has made it her personal mission to kill me with cuteness. I finished that gorgeous yarn (up there^) yesterday (while I was putting off all the cleaning I did today) and I'm very proud of it. It's spun quite evenly and the colors are just lovely (purchased the roving from FreckleFaceFibers). I've named it Never Land. It's 90% merino, 10% tussah silk, light fingering weight and the yardage is around 400 yards. And I think it's a beauty. It will be updated to the shop on November 15th.

Speaking of etsy, as I've been sitting here writing to you I've made two sales! Selling wares is a funny thing... When it rains it pours, it seems. Today I took new product pictures of all of my yarn and I think it gives the shop a nice professional look (take a look, tell me what you think). Next is to re-photograph all the roving, but that's for another day.

For right now, I'm loving my tea, Dino, and spending my afternoon in peace.
